Jenna Rae has been writing since she could pick up a pencil and paper. She wrote her first novel, complete with illustrations, at age seven. During her youth in a single-parent, low-income household in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, she often found a corner where she could jot down ideas, poetry and short stories that helped her escape a flawed childhood. On Saturdays, her mother would take her and her sisters to the local public library where Rae often dreamed and imagined that her own work would one day grace the literary shelves.
Rae’s hobby was just that; something in which she indulged during her free time. It wasn’t until her high school journalism teacher began entering her work in writing contests, many of which she won, that she realized she wanted to turn her favorite past-time into a career. Deterred by others who convinced her that she should study something that was in demand, Rae abandoned this dream for a short while and settled for news writing, and received her B.A. in Journalism & Mass Media Studies from Rutgers University in 2004. On the side, she performed spoken word on the college circuit and continued to practice her first love, writing creatively.
Rae relocated to Tampa, Florida, where she used her degree to land a marketing job with a competitive television station, and later left that field to teach Language Arts in a low-income neighborhood where she could affect and encourage junior high school students. This career move, although not very lucrative, allowed Rae the much-needed extra time to focus on what she enjoys the most. She has written No Ordinary Justice, Behind the Palmetto Tree, and is working on her third book, which is her non-fiction debut, Kill ‘Em With Kindness.
Rae still lives in Tampa with her daughter, Nala
